Another from the drafts queue...
That’s where I stopped and for the life of me I cannot remember the book I was reading at the time which is a bit sucky.
I have (what I think) are odd reading tastes. I’ve read some things that one might not necessarily associate with someone of my age or gender but I like reading. Lately, I’ve been catching up on a lot of comics stuff in the form of graphic novels or compilations of things.
I AM NOT sad I stopped buying comics.
As far as what I see from the big two go, things have run off the rails but then I don’t know what their sales figures are these days. I don’t know what the impact of online readers are as opposed to print. I do know the last comic shop I patronized closed and another that was local to me closed as well in the last few years.
I guess comics at least in that form are undergoing a change.
I have to say though more often than not I’m not especially crazy about what I do read only because it appears that both the major comic companies now are all about ‘event’ comics.
What had been a sporadic treat at one time (the crossover) now has become the default position for comics I would figure to drive sales but I can’t be bothered.
Then there’s the art...
I was going to take a pic of something I had been reading because it was SO TERRIBLE, it was such a completely muddy mess as to be unreadable.
I worked as a colorist at one time, well before Photoshop had taken over comics coloring (at least I think they’re using Photoshop) and coloring was fairly straightforward because of the limitations of the medium.
Anyway, I remember Mike Higgins clearly talking about coloring one night over a game of RISK at Terry Kavanaugh’s (at least I think it was RISK but alcohol may have been involved) and he made a point about when you were coloring anything it was important to establish a foreground, mid-ground and background with your colors.
Today, coloring has become what would best be described as a bunch of frustrated pencillers who have decided to take out their anger over their own shortcomings via Photoshop.
Some manage to do a great job coloring but unfortunately most do not.
So, I was reading this Guardians of the Galaxy thing and it was.... really, really bad. I’m sure I’ll find something else because I was almost going to take a picture of the thing. It was so overworked that you couldn’t pull out any one thing in the soup that the damn thing had become.
I’ll get back to this because it’s something of a pet peeve for me - the loss of clear storytelling in comics. It’s funny because comics likely has never been more popular in some ways but man, they sure seem to be doing their level best to destroy the medium.
